Thai junta cracks down on opposition ahead of constitution vote

At least 25 people detained or charged as new law against referendum campaigning bites

Financial Times | 28 April 2016

Thailand’s ruling generals have launched a new anti-opposition crackdown as they attempt to force through a contentious draft constitution and shore up their hold on power.

More than 25 people have been detained or charged this week over public and social media protests, including “foul and strong” Facebook posts that attacked the proposed charter ahead of a referendum on it.

The clampdown on expression has fuelled accusations that the military and their establishment allies in Bangkok have no intention of allowing free and meaningful votes in either August’s plebiscite or next year’s national elections.
