Vietnam’s steel exports rake in 2.53 billion USD in 7 months

Vietnam Plus | 21 August 2018

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s steel exports rose 40.4 percent year on year to 3.41 million tonnes in the first seven months of the year, raking in 2.53 billion USD, up 56.3 percent.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Cambodia [Vietnamese in Cambodia?!] was the largest importer of Vietnamese steel during the January-July period, accounting for 37 percent of the total steel export volume.

The country’s steel exports to Cambodia increased by 49 percent in volume and 77.9 per cent in value over the same period last year, reaching 717,572 tonnes, equivalent to 462.73 million USD.

Some 532,779 million tonnes were shipped to the US for 452.81 million USD, increasing by 71.6 percent in volume and 81.7 percent in turnover.

Shipments to Malaysia escalated 88.5 per cent in volume and 108.6 per cent in value to reach 391,607 tonnes, or 266.98 million USD.

Indonesia splashed out 295.33 million USD purchasing 372,514 tonnes of Vietnamese steel, up 22.3 percent in volume, and 33 percent in value.

However, steel exports declined sharply in the following markets: Switzerland (down 96 percent in turnover), Saudi Arabia (down 63.4 percent in value), and Pakistan (down 45.6 percent in value).

During the period, steel export price increased by 11.3 percent to reach average 742.8 USD per tonne. Of which, exports to Hong Kong reached the highest rate with 2,995.8 USD per tonne, up 33.4 percent. Some markets also enjoyed good prices such as Switzerland, Turkey, China and Ukraine.

In contrast, exports to Taiwan have the lowest price of 556.7 USD per tonne, a year-on-year decrease of 14 percent.

Although the steel sector has witnessed thriving exports, it is struggling to cope with trade defence lawsuits in the context of growing protectionism. From July 16 to August 9, the sector faced anti-dumping lawsuits in many foreign countries such as Thailand, the EU, Canada, Malaysia, the US, the Eurasian Economic Union, and India.

Particularly, within only a week (July 27 to August 2), the US launched two investigations into the avoidance of paying anti-dumping and anti-subsidy taxes on corrosion-resistant steel and cold rolled steel from Vietnam.

As of the end of June, local steel products were the target of 37 anti-dumping lawsuits among 78 trade remedy lawsuits against Vietnamese exports from the outset of the year.

Chairman of the Vietnam Steel Association (VSA) Ho Nghia Dung said that improving competitive capacity to expand export markets and understanding of international trade regulations are significant for Vietnamese steel firms to respond to trade defence lawsuits.

The association recommended the state to enhance the use of trade defence tools to protect domestic steel production.-VNA

[Demographic Vietnamization: Elections, Military] New Cambodian gov’t to keep building ties with Vietnam: CPP spokesman

New Cambodian gov’t to keep building ties with Vietnam: CPP spokesman

Vietnam Plus | 16 August 2018

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The new government of Cambodia led by the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) will still attach importance to building relations with Vietnam, CPP Spokesman Sok Eysan told Vietnam News Agency.

The National Election Committee of Cambodia on August 15 announced the results of the general election held on July 29. The CPP won all 125 parliamentary seats.

Sok Eysan said relations between Vietnam and Cambodia are traditional and have gone through ups and downs over the years.

Meanwhile, opposition and reactionary forces with insular nationalism are still seeking ways to rekindle some issues between the two countries. Such acts won’t drive a wedge between the nations, he stressed.

He added the CPP defines the Vietnam-Cambodia friendship as strategic relations with long-standing fraternity. It will continue enhancing these ties to make them long-term and sustainable relations.

Regarding the election, the spokesman said the CPP won a big victory after overcoming all difficulties, obstacles and sabotage of overseas opposition forces. It considered the win a great triumph of the Cambodian people.

The election was carried out in a democratic, free, judicious, fair and successful manner, he claimed, noting that more than 83 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. At 22,967 polling stations nationwide, many people were queued up to vote before polls even opened. This showed their desire to vote and decide the country’s destiny, he noted.

That the US and some western nations assessed the election as undemocratic with the absence of opposition parties is biased because the US, Australia and the European Union did not send observers to this election, he said, adding that such evaluations were inaccurate and Cambodia cannot accept them.

Sok Eysan went on to say that his country keeps viewpoints on external relations as enshrined in its constitution. Those relations must be based on the respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality as members of the United Nation and not interfering in each other’s internal affairs.

Cambodia will always be a friend of all countries, regardless of religion and colour, he emphasised.

In the interview, the spokesman said since 1998, Cambodia has had a full stability and national conciliation with a government and state ruled by the King, thus opening up a new and proud era of national development.

In terms of the new government’s formation, Sok Eysan quoted CPP President Samdech Techo Hun Sen as saying that the 6th National Assembly will convene the first session on September 5 chaired by King Norodom Sihamoni. Later the same day, new parliamentarians will take an oath at the Royal Palace. Members of the new government will be sworn in on September 6, and the new Cabinet will have its first meeting a day later. –VNA

Soc Trang province to work to reinforce Vietnam-Cambodia ties

Vietnam Plus | 17 July 2018

Soc Trang (VNA) – Officers of the Military High Command of southern Soc Trang province had a working session with visiting representatives of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces on July 17, stressing that the locality always respects the two countries’ bilateral traditional friendship and all-round cooperation.

Col. Tran Van Lau, head of the command, informed the Cambodian delegation of local socio-economic developments and defence-security situation, especially ethnic minority and religious policies, in the first half of 2018.

The province has implemented ethnic and religious policies well, particularly in rural areas inhabited by Khmer ethnic people. While the socio-economic developments and defence-security situation have been maintained, sustainable poverty reduction models have also been expanded, thus helping to improve locals’ material and spiritual life, he noted.

He affirmed that Soc Trang always treasures the sound neighbourliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive and sustainable cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia. It will work harder to promote the people-to-people diplomacy and solidarity between the two peoples.

For his part, Lt. Gen. Yong Mao, deputy head of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ development agency, said their working visit to Soc Trang was an occasion to enhance the fine cooperation between the two countries and affirm their time-honoured solidarity.

He thanked Vietnam, the Vietnam People’s Army and Soc Trang province for helping Cambodia get out of the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime [the CPP's Hallelujah chorus], voicing his hope that bilateral relations will become even stronger and reap more achievements in the future.-VNA

Vietnam Plus | 10 July 2018

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Representatives from the Vietnamese Embassy, the Khmer-Vietnamese Association and Vietnamese businesses in Cambodia on July 10 afternoon visited Vietnamese families in Phnom Penh affected by the blaze which took place early morning the same day.

Ambassador Vu Quang Minh thanked local authorities and the Cambodia Red Cross Society for their timely support to the victims, and pledged that the embassy and relevant units will continue to mobilise assistance for them.

The fire began at 3.30am on July 10 in Russey Keo district, Phnom Penh, destroying 59 houses and assets of 67 households, including 58 households of Vietnamese Cambodian people.

The initial conclusion shows that the fire was caused by an electrical fault. Firefighters used 32 fire engines, but the road was so small and the houses were made of wood so that the fire trucks found it hard to battle the fire.

Following the incident, the Vietnamese Embassy and the Khmer-Vietnamese Association sent officials to the site and had working sessions with local authorities and police to seek aid for the victims.-VNA
