History
Cambodia Angkor Air is a full service founded in July 2009, by both the Cambodian Government and Vietnam Airlines with an initial capital of $100 million. It offers both Business Class and Economy onboard its Airbus A321, whilst only economy is available onboard its ATR 72. It replaced national airline Royal Air Cambodge, which went bankrupt in 2001, and concentrates on serving tourist routes within Cambodia, most notably catering for visitors of Angkor Wat.[4]Since its launch, Cambodia Angkor Air has largely enjoyed a monopoly in the Cambodian domestic aviation market. However Cambodia's domestic aviation sector is expected to become more competitive with the entry of 2 Cambodian carriers. One of the carrier named Cambodia Bayon Airlines and is backed by Joy Air, a company that is majority owned and controlled by China's China Eastern Airlines. The second carrier named Bassaka Air that joined hands with Naga corp, and has a view of Chinas' cities and neighbor countries as their future destination.
2009 July 28, Cambodia Angkor Air launched with flights with its ATR 72 on the following routes; Phnom Penh – Siem Reap, Phnom Penh – Ho Chi Minh and Siem Reap – Ho Chi Minh. Cambodia Angkor Air started codesharing with Vietnam Airlines and uses "VN" in place of its airline code "K6" with codeshare flight number on Vietnam routes.[5]
2009 September 2 – National carrier Cambodia Angkor Air received a new Airbus A321.[6]
2011 December 14 – Cambodia Angkor Air started up a second domestic route within Cambodia, operating 3 weekly Siem Reap – Sihanoukville services on board an ATR 72 turboprop.[7]
2012 November 30 – Cambodia Angkor Air commenced flights to Thailand, between Siem Reap – Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (daily frequency) and breaks the monopoly of Thailand's carrier Bangkok Airways on this route. The route is operated by CAA's ATR 72 turboprop. On 31 March 2013, Cambodia Angkor Air increased the frequency of Siem Reap to Bangkok, to include a second daily flight. In July later that year, it was increased again to three daily flights. [8] [9]
2013 January 7 – Cambodia Angkor Air revealed the launch of Hanoi services from both its hubs at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, with one daily flight each, on the Airbus A321. This was the second destination in Vietnam to be served by Cambodia Angkor Air.[8][10]
2013 February 1 – Cambodia Angkor Air launched its second route to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport Thailand, from Phnom Penh. Flights are operated daily by an Airbus A321.[11]
2013 March 6 – Cambodia's flagship airline Cambodia Angkor Air forecasted a loss for the first time, due to the rapid expansion and increased exposure to competition.[12]
2013 March 6 – Cambodia Angkor Air adjusted the Sihanoukville operation, where the existing 3 weekly Siem Reap – Sihanoukville return service was be rerouted via Phnom Penh, with the flight operating as Siem Reap – Sihanoukville – Phnom Penh – Siem Reap.[13]
2013 July 14 – Cambodia Angkor Air commenced charter operations on Siem Reap – Xiamen route.[14]
2013 September 26 – Cambodia Angkor Air commences inaugural flights to China. Flights to Guangzhou, China from Siem Reap,Cambodia operate daily aboard an Airbus A321. This broke the monopoly of the Chinese carrier, China Southern Airlines who had operated a daily frequency (now 11 weekly).[15]
2013 December 26 – National carrier Cambodia Angkor Air commences seasonal Siem Reap – Hangzhou, China.
2013 December 26 – Cambodia Angkor Air commenced new scheduled services to Shanghai–Pudong,China from both its hubs at Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, each with four weekly frequencies on board Airbus A321 aircraft.[16]
2014 January 18 and 23 – Cambodia Angkor Air start its charter flight to Wenzhou and Zhengzhou.
2014 February 1 – Charter flights from Sieam Reap to Fuzhou began.
2015 January 16 – Cambodia Angkor Air launch a charter flight to Singapore Changi International Airport with Airbus A321.
2015 October 25 – Cambodia Angkor Air from 25OCT15 is launching new intra-Indo-China service, connecting flights between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The airline plans to operate Ho Chi Minh – Phnom Penh – Vientiane – Hanoi routing 3 times a week, using Airbus A321 aircraft.Vietnam Airlines will be placing its VN code on this service, Vietnam Airlines Operate on this route daily time and Cambodia Angkor Air K6 code will appear on Vietnam Airlines flight on this router either.
2015 October 26 – Cambodia Angkor Air resumes Siem Reap - Shanghai route.
2015 December 25 – Cambodia Angkor Air start charter flight to Seoul Incheon.
