Elizabeth Becker:
For
the record, this description of how my colleagues and I were kept out
of an interview of Pol Pot bears no resemblance to what happened. I
arrived on the Thai-Cambodian border with Stephen Heder, the respected
scholar who would have translated the interview,
and a photographer. None of us wore high heels; we carried camera
equipment, not designer suitcases. The next morning we were mysteriously
blocked from driving to the interview despite high-level assurances we
would be welcome.
