RFA, VOA accused of ‘serving’ opposition
The government has slammed broadcasters Radio Free Asia and
Voice of America as “political instruments serving the interests of the
opposition party” and accused them of fabricating news in a speech
delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Sok An on Tuesday. [not fabrication; just stop saying stupid things!!]
The US-government-funded broadcasters have been taken to task before
by the government for their critical views, but the latest statements,
released in full by the Council of Ministers’ Press and Quick Reaction
Unit (PQRU), are directly linked to their election coverage.
Both VOA and RFA repudiated charges of bias or fabrication in statements last night.
“The Voice of America strongly rejects any suggestion that it
fabricates or manipulates its news broadcasts or shows favor toward any
political party. VOA reporting is required by our legally mandated
charter and our journalistic principles to be ‘accurate, objective and
comprehensive’,” one statement reads.
RFA added that the PQRU’s statement was intended to have a chilling effect on the media.
“This unfortunate statement from The Cambodian Council of Ministers
Press and Quick Reaction Unit is only the latest in a series of actions
intended to intimidate free, independent media and journalism in
Cambodia,” the broadcaster said.
The ERA report criticised the broadcast media environment as being
biased towards the ruling party, an allegation that the PQRU rejected,
citing not just RFA and VOA, but the use of social media networks by the
CNRP to “disseminate false and manipulated information to cause
sabotage and unrest in the society”.
The statement also fingers The Phnom Penh Post and The Cambodia Daily as having “mostly published negative views discrediting the Royal Government and the CPP”.
Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan yesterday singled out RFA
as having a mission to “abuse sovereignty", but said there would be no
efforts to gag the broadcaster.
“Ninety per cent at least of [RFA’s] content is to insult the
government; they never feel shame to use words to insult the prime
minister and the government. VOA is a little more moderate,” he said.
“We respect press freedom based on ethics and professionalism. We do not
expect RFA to support the government or support the CPP.”
In October 2012, both VOA and RFA were summoned to the Council of
Ministers for a secretive meeting that RFA later called a “blatant
attempt to discourage objective reporting on the government”.
And non of the media in Cambodia TV,Print & Radio had NEVER fabricated or reported untruthful news that favour the CPP for the past 30 years and hiddens the facts and miss-conducts by the CPP government until today?
ReplyDeleteDo any of the media in Cambodia are 1/ independent 2/ report balance news that foster the advancing of the societies? have the media in Cambodia seen how other effective journalist in other country report and critique it government when they are at fault. For example Cheam Yeap hit and run and killed a motorist...as MP he should be setting a good example instead he when above and beyond the laws to bypass any criminals act that he performed...
Or has any of the media reports to the people the army and police use of violents is against the consitution and who should be sack as a result....
I am surprise with the CPP comments as international news are balance compare to news from Cambodia's medias. Also CPP has been spending big to buy RFA & VOA reporters to side with their agenda in which they did successfully at time. However RFA & VOA there still many reporters who put national interests ahead of their personal interest. These mind set is contrary to CPP agenda and their agenda is personal interests at all costs to national insterests, it is demonstrated that Hun Sen never listen to the electorate, CPP also stopped listend to 50% of the population saying they need to probe into the electoral frad and rigging by the NEC and the CPP themself and the CPP's media inside Cambodia did not make any challenge or representation of the 50% of the population who demanded changes and reforms to the broken and corrupted systems that has been in place for far too long..this include Hun Sen...even the communist government of Vietnam or north Korea changes it leader...but in Cambodia and in CPP there is only one man Hun Sen ...what if he get hit by a tank tomorrow or die from a plan crash...will Cambodia STOP living because of this potential changes? There is NO TALK ABOUT PROSPOSING A BALANCE SOLUTIONS THAT IS A WIN-WIN to CNRP and CPP and the People of Cambodia except CPP continual target to eliminate those that critique them and challenge them from holding on to power and their abilities to sit above the laws or constitution...thus keep killing with out being any conviction.
