In an "Opinion" in the February 27, 2014 edition of The Cambodia Daily, Allen Myers wrote, « If "Yuon" has now become offensive, it is largely because people like Sam Rainsy, Kem Sokha and the CNRP regularly use it as part of their scapegoating of Vietnamese people for Cambodian problems. »
Regarding his comment on the term "Yuon," Allen Myers, through his highly politicized views, proves his ignorance of the Khmer language and its common use. For more than ten years, as a well-known pro-CPP propagandist, he has been trying to manipulate non-Khmer observers into believing that any opponents or critics to the pro-Hanoi Hun Sen regime are extremists and racists.
This false controversy but real manipulation revolves around the term "Yuon." In fact, this term just means Vietnamese, as "Deutsch," on the banks of the Rhine, means German.
Once the record is put straight on this semantical discussion, the rest of Allen Myers’s argumentation will automatically fall apart.
To prove how commonly "Yuon" is used in every day’s language by the Khmer people, one can do a Google search in Khmer by just entering the word "Yuon" in Khmer script ("យួន")
About 114,000 results will appear, referring to writings in Khmer containing the appellation "យួន" published over a recent period of time, which confirms that this appellation is being used everyday by everybody in Cambodia, on all occasions, without having any pejorative connotation.
This neutral meaning is also confirmed by the most authoritative Cambodian dictionary published by the Buddhist Institute in 1967 and used until today, without any correction, by all Khmer students and researchers. http://tinyurl.com/mqh6y7t
It would be hard to find anybody or any institution, including pro-CPP medias (newspapers, Websites and TV stations), who do not use the appellations "Yuon" and "Vietnamese" interchangeably. http://tinyurl.com/qbjqk6w
Most ironically, Government’s spokesman Phay Siphan, who seems to inspire Allen Myers in their attacks against me as opposition leader, was caught spontaneously using the appellation "Yuon" twice in a short interview with Voice of America. https://app.box.com/s/
With regard to the opposition CNRP’s "scapegoating of Vietnamese people for Cambodian problems," I would like to point to the fact that our party’s political platform for the last elections and the current parliamentary term, is made up of seven points (pensions, civil service, minimum wages, farm prices, health care, education and employment, inflation) corresponding, in our views, to Cambodian most fundamental problems. None of the problems put forward is related, for both the cause and the solution, to any foreign people. They are just Cambodian problems to be addressed by Cambodians alone.
I am used to hearing of Allen Myers’s pro-CPP views: In an “Open letter to Sam Rainsy” dated 13 March 2012, he praised Hun Sen’s Cambodia as a country which is "not lacking in most basic freedoms, has a vibrant press and five different parties represented in the National Assembly," and where all successive elections had been "democratic." He also said that my past problems with, and expulsions from, the National Assembly and all the judicial sentences handed down on me, were "in accordance with the constitution and relevant laws. http://www.akp.gov.kh/
