UN rights envoy starts visit today
The most senior UN human rights official to visit the Kingdom
since 2010 will arrive today to meet with government representatives and
civil society groups, the local UN rights office announced on Friday.
Flavia Pansieri, UN deputy high commissioner for human rights, will
visit for five days and meet with senior government officials, including
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hor Namhong, the UN said in a statement.
The local UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights did not
respond to questions yesterday as to whether the visit was in response
to the heavy-handed crackdown on protests in January that left four dead
and dozens imprisoned or the ongoing ban on demonstrations.
Cambodia National Rescue Party spokesman Yem Ponharith said the
opposition did not yet have a meeting scheduled with Pansieri but was
planning to request one today.
