Today, after 36 years under King Juan Carlos, Spain has sworn in
his son Felipe VI as the new monarch. In a deliberately low-key
ceremony, Felipe and the new Queen Letizia attended their first royal
engagement with their two daughters. After a brief military parade, the
family was watched by millions as they walked into the lower house of
parliament in Madrid, where Felipe will address the country's leaders.
While pomp and circumstance was limited to just some trays of cold
tapas, and cava instead of champagne, Letizia, a former journalist,
looked content with a kiss from her new king after he received his
ceremonial sash from his father. Unfortunately the ceremony took place
just hours after Spain had been dumped out of the World Cup.
