Man's head is expanded with a balloon the size of a grapefruit during groundbreaking op to replace the skin on his scalp

Chris Stoyanov from Surrey was left with a huge bald patch after surgeons removed 23cm of skin to stop a tumour, which had been growing for 17 years, from piercing his skull. Plastic surgeon Niall Kirkpatrick devised a procedure to correct the bald patch, inserting a balloon under the 30-year-old's skin (left). It was gradually inflated with liquid over a six-month period, during which time Mr Stoyanov had to take great care to ensure it didn't burst.
