RP U14 booters top Group A with 5-0 beating of Cambodia
The Philippine U14 Girls football team continued their impressive showing in the ASEAN Regional Championships with a comfortable 5-0 win over Cambodia on Thursday, allowing them to top Group A after finishing 3-of-3 in the group stage.
Joyce Semacio from Davao opened the scoring before Itsuko Bacatan of Cebu gave the Philippines a 2-0 lead by halftime. An own goal added a third after the break and Lindsay Whaley from Olangapo and Chloe Hails from NCR wrapped up the comfortable victory.
Having scored twelve goals and conceded none in the group stage, the Philippines will be proud of their achievements so far, but will be looking ahead to the semifinals as their reward for the impressive performances in the group stage is a clash with Myanmar, runners-up of the other group after beating Malaysia 1-0 and losing to Thailand 5-0.
After the game, Head Coach Let Dimzon said: "[It was] A good result to end the elimination round...although it was a non-bearing game, even if we lost we would still have been in the semifinals, our girls wanted to secure our spot at the top of the group. Cambodia gave our team a hard time in attack during the first half, but Trebol and Sernacio stopped their distribution in front."
Despite the comfortable win, Dimzon added, "Our girls felt a bit pressured, they were rushing to score even though the space was too tight, so they only had a few convincing attempts [at goal]. The team only adjusted before the first half ended."
The team has some adjustments left to make, then, with a place in the knockout round settled and their opponents known. It seems that the girls can still improve as this tournament goes on, showing the bright future that awaits them and women's football.
In the other semifinal, pre-tournament favorites Vietnam and Thailand will have to battle it out in a tough match. The winner of the Final will qualify for the next stage, where they will face the winners of the other regional competitions.
