THE LOCUST EFFECT -- the crushing impact of the plague of violence on the poor
Violence from war or conflict...that is not what we are speaking of
here. Rather, we are directing attention to the billions of additional
poor people who are impacted by "common," everyday violence in their
otherwise relatively stable country.
Violence in the developing world is like grief in the developed world--it's everywhere but we just don't see it...
The relentless threat of violence is part of the core context of their
lives, but we are unlikely to see it and they are unlikely to tell us
about it. We would be wise, however, to not be fooled--because like
grief, the thing we cannot see may be the deepest part of their day.
