Hamas fire rockets at Israeli cities after Gaza is pounded by airstrikes as 40,000 reservists called up and tanks massed for 'planned operation'

The moment of an Israeli strike on a target in Gaza is captured as its armed forces step up the country's action against the Islamic militant group Hamas. Tonight Hamas said it had launched rocket attacks against three Israeli cities - Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa - but authorities said there had been no casualties. Air raid sirens in the cities prompted people to take shelter (inset) and evacuate Israel's Mediterranean beaches. The Israeli military has called up 40,000 reservists, massed tanks on the border with Gaza and said its operation is 'open-ended'.
