'How do we get this out?' U2 make surprise performance during Apple launch event before announcing new album has dropped for FREE on iTunes
Veteran Irish rockers U2
pulled off a huge surprise during Apple Inc's event to launch
its new products on Tuesday, making their latest album available for
free on Apple's iTunes online store.
The Grammy Award-winning band performed their new song, The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone), at the Cupertino,
California event, at which Apple unveiled two new iPhones, a
smart watch and a mobile payments system.
But
that wasn't the kicker: the band then announcing that their entire new
11-track album, Songs Of Innocence, has dropped exclusively on iTunes
for FREE.

'How do we get this out?' lead singer Bono asked the audience as he revealed that their new album was finished and ready to go.

The album
immediately appeared in iTunes users' music libraries and will be available to download for free until October 13.
Cook called it the largest album release in history because
there are more than 500 million iTunes users.
However, the giveaway
is unlikely to count towards official music sales figures at
Nielsen SoundScan because it was distributed for free.
A fitting performance: The rockers took to
the stage to perform the first track off their upcoming album, titled
The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone), for the packed house, stealing the

mobile payments system having also launched
The band will release the 11-track Songs Of Innocence as well as a deluxe version featuring four new tracks and acoustic
performances to the rest of the world on October 14, their label,
Interscope Records, said on Tuesday.
In July 2013, rapper Jay Z released his album Magna Carter
Holy Grail for free to a million users of Samsung smartphones
via a special app.
However, the one million copies were not
eligible for Nielsen or Billboard's weekly charts of
best-selling albums for the same reason.
