A senior Cambodian politician is calling on Australia to reconsider plans for a refugee deal between the two nations, saying it would have negative consequences for his country.

First Vice president of the National Assembly, Kem Sokha, made the plea in a letter to Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, Alison Burrows.

He says he's heard from Bhuddist monks, students and intellectuals who have voiced concerns about the possible economic and social consequences.

Joyce Fu is executive director of an Australian NGO working in Cambodia called Corner Link.

She told Biwa Kwan the Cambodian government is under growing pressure to back out of the deal.
