The
new 6-lane highway along the sea coast connecting Kampot to Vietnam (Ha
Tien) running through Kep and destroying several fishing villages in
its path and the once protected mangrove forest is now (as of 1 Dec.
3014) at Om Peng Village, within sight of the next village of Ang Kaol
where we worked for 3 years). We arrived at 11:30 when students were
getting out school. They said each house is paid
a certain sum (they don't know the amount) as it's destroyed and the
family left homeless. Again imagine having 6-lane highway running
through and around Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket islands. I am reminded
of history:
"...the Vietnamese migrated southward until they
outnumbered Cambodians in the southern delta region. Over time, they
became the de facto rulers" (Joel Brinkley, Cambodia's Curse).
