Natasha Stott Despoja will receive a pre-election snapshot of Myanmar's reform agenda from her political hero Aung San Suu Kyi and other women striving for peace.

Australia's ambassador for women and girls will visit the once-reclusive state this week.

She'll be meeting with Myanmar government officials, Opposition Leader Suu Kyi and women community leaders, to discuss the country's reform path and other issues such as gender violence.

"Daw Aung San Suu Kyi ... is my political hero," she said, adding the pair had met twice previously in Australia and Myanmar.

For 60 years, armed conflict in the country has led to widespread statelessness, and poverty.

Myanmar is due to go to an election in late October or early November but there's some concerns the polls won't be free and fair.

On Wednesday Ms Stott Despoja travels to Cambodia.

She will visit a Phnom Penh garment factory and meet survivors of human trafficking.

Access to healthcare, education, increasing women's job prospects are among issues she'll discuss with officials and aid groups.

The former Australian Democrats leader previously visited Cambodia as an election observer and as part of a parliamentary delegation.
