[Vietnamization] CAMBODIA: A Shattered Society - Vietnamese Occupation, Our Leaders, CULTURE AT RISK

CAMBODIA: A Shattered Society (translated from French "Le Mal cambodgien: histoire d'une societe traditionelle face a ses leaders politiques, 1946-1987", University of California Press, 1989, 1994)

Chapter 8: The Vietnamese Occupation and the Resistance

...a pitiless indifference to everything outside the family microcosm. Sam Sok...explains:
"We are almost always inclined to expect too much from our 'leaders.'... We find only demigods, who care above all for themselves and their private interests. They present no serious and coherent political program nor clearly defined objectives, nothing but empty words and speeches wrapped in an artistic vagueness calculated to dull the mind...."
...an international community that was used to its blindness, its opportunism, and its refusal to state or even to admit that people were continuing to die arbitrarily in the RPK.
