Vietnam's unification made it an overwhelmingly powerful neighbor and ominous threat to the very survival of Cambodia.

... After 1830, Vietnamese influence increased, culminating in a policy of partial annexation of Cambodia between 1835 and 1845. Cambodia, having lost it's independence, had withered to the status of a "protectorate" of its neighbor.
