Ha Noi – Ho Chi Minh City straight air route to be decided this month

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) this month will decide whether a straight air route linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city over the Lao and Cambodian airspaces will be operated or not, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hong Truong has said. At a press briefing on the ministry's Q3 plan in Hanoi on October 7, Truong said flight simulator (SIM) tests conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) and VietJet Air showed that the proposed new route is 86km shorter than the current one, saving five minutes of flying time and 190kg of fuel. The results were also verified by experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Thailand and Vietnam, he said. Being aware of the potential of the route, dubbed "golden air route", the ministry has set up a team for further research of the project, said Truong. However, the new route flies over Laos and Cambodia , Vietnam has to pay fee for using their airspaces. Therefore, a working team comprising CAAV members and representatives … [Read more...]

Vietnam begins testing controversial cross-Indochina route on flight simulator

Two Vietnamese air carriers were asked on Thursday to use flight simulator systems to begin test flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on a controversial straight air route proposed by a retired pilot that crosses the airspace of Laos and Cambodia. National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and no-frills airline VietJet Air were requested to cooperate with the Flight Moderation Office to develop the flight simulation plans for the new flying path, dubbed the "golden air route" by its proposer, according to a document signed by the chief of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. The testing runs from August 29 to September 3, with pilots using the Boeing 777, Airbus A321, and A320 aircraft models during the simulated flights. The two carriers must analyze and evaluate the flying costs and benefits of the "golden air route," and report to the CAAV after finishing the test flights. The CAAV said results from the flight simulators usually reach a 99 percent accuracy rate … [Read more...]

VN to negotiate with Laos, Cambodia on transit fees for new air route

VietNamNet Bridge - Airlines are taking a wait and see attitude about the proposed air route between Hanoi and HCM City that will fly over Cambodia and Laos airspace, cutting flight time compared to the current route. relate news Vietnam gets approval to fly over Cambodia, Lao airspace Experts have said that this will be the most economical air route to follow. The agreements reached between the Vietnamese Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang and Lao and Cambodian counterparts have laid a foundation for the deployment of the new air route. The route, which is more direct path between the two cities, is expected to cut down expenses and save time. Currently airlines have to fly across the sea, which increases the amount of fuel and flight time. However, air carriers are still hesitant to develop flights on the air route because they still cannot calculate the total expenses of every flight. The problem is that while airlines can save money on air petrol, they may have to pay higher … [Read more...]

Stop contentious Hanoi-HCMC air route: PM

Vietnam has five airline operators. Domestic flights play an important role in economic development and national security (Photo: H.Son) In response to a proposal by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Defense that the government should reject the controversial Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City air route, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung agreed to halt the project. The project was conceived in 1983 by former military pilot Mai Trong Tuan who said a new, straight air route along the 106th meridian east would cut the flying distance and flight times between Hanoi and HCMC. This "Golden Air Route" would save a great deal of money, Tuan said. But in an official statement November 30, the Ministry of Transport said the new route is just 60 km shorter than the current one and would take aircraft over the neighboring countries of Cambodia and Laos. Airlines would have to pay fees to the other countries for use of their air space in addition to other international flight charges. The …[Read more...]

CAAV, scientists at loggerheads over ‘Golden Route’

Scientists and members of Vietnam's civil aviation body clashed over the issue of cost during a debate on the proposed Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City air route on December 6 in Hanoi.  Chairman of the Vietnam Economics Association (VEA) Prof. Tran Phuong said the discussion aimed to clarify the economic efficiency of operating a straight flight path between the two cities, dubbed the "Golden Route." More than 100 scientists, representatives from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), and airline operators took part in the meeting. The CAAV has continually insisted that the route, which would run straight along the 106the meridian, is not feasible. It has cited a host of reasons for its refusal of the plan, including national security issues and cost as the new flight path would take aircraft over neighboring Cambodia and Laos. During the meeting, Dr. Nguyen Thien Tong, former dean of the Aeronautical Faculty at HCMC University of Technology and lawyer Nguyen Dang Liem …[Read more...]

Gov’t should abandon aviation Golden Route: transport ministry

The contentious Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City air route proposed along the 106th meridian east should be rejected by the government, said the Ministry of Transport. In an official statement November 30 to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Transport Deputy Minister Pham Quy Tieu said the new route would not be feasible. The plan to fly aircraft in a straight line between Hanoi and HCM City over neighboring Cambodia and Laos, known as the Golden Route, could not be carried out because of national security issues and economic inefficiency, the statement said. For the project to go ahead, airlines would have to pay fees to the neighboring countries for use of their airspace in addition to other international flight charges. The cost of flights would therefore increase by up to US$800 excluding passenger service charges, the statement added. New Hanoi-HCMC air route not practicable: officials

Civil and military aviation officials are lukewarm about a plan for aircraft to fly in a straight line between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City over neighboring countries. At a meeting held November 4 between officials from the Ministry of Transport, Government Office, Party Office, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), Antiaircraft Military Force, and airlines, several warned the new route would impact on national security since it passes through some sensitive areas, including military training zones. Though the route, along 106º east longitude, would be much shorter than the current one that takes aircraft over the East Sea, officials said at the meeting it would not reduce costs much since Laos and Cambodia would have to be paid fees for using their airspace. Nevertheless, discussion participants said it would be feasible for an international flight, CAAV and concerned agencies have to push up the progression to conduct it to meet socioeconomic growth. Air authority accepts new flight route plans

Following a request from the Prime Minister, after reading some articles in Sai Gon Giai Phong, a meeting on July 9 was held between the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) and an author of a project to open a Hanoi-HCM City air route along the 106th meridian east. At the meeting, Mai Trong Tuan, author of the "golden air route" project, which was planned in 1983, stuck to his opinions that the plan along the 106th meridian east will cut the flying distance between Hanoi and HCMC, and flight times by ten minutes. Bui Van Vo, a senior CAAV official, presented arguments concerning national security, economic efficiency, flight safety and aviation security. Lai Xuan Thanh, deputy head of CAAV, applauded the author's project, saying that CAAV also nurtured the same route. He repeated that the current Ho Chi Minh City- Hanoi route, which means planes have to fly east to remain in Vietnam airspace, was the best route. However, the CAAV will adjust the present air route from … [Read more...]

New “straight line” air route proposed

The Hanoi Times - The Vietnam Aviation Department is considering a proposal to establish anew air route from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. The "golden air route" initiative proposed by Mai Trong Tuan, a former military pilot, is expected to cut 25 minutes of travel time from Hanoi to HCMC and save fuel. After the proposal was put forward in late June, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung asked the Transport Ministry and the Vietnam Aviation Department to meet with Tuan to discuss the proposal further. According to Tuan, a direct air route along 106thmeridian east will cut the flying distance between Hanoi and HCMC from 1,200 kilometers at present to 1,000 kilometers. The flying time will be reduced from 105 minutes to 80 minutes. The proposed new air route will mean planes flying between the capital and HCMC will fly over Laos and Cambodia, rather than over the ocean and following Vietnam's "S" shape.A 200-passenger plane which uses 25,000 liters of fuel at present may save 5,000 liters of fuel …[Read more...]
