AMERICAN POLITICS AND CAMBODIA

As an elected representative of the Cambodian people I would like to congratulate Donald Trump on his election as the soon-to-be 45th President of the United States of America, which remains a model of democracy for the whole world.

It goes without saying that, regardless of the final result of yesterday's elections, the U.S.A. will continue to uphold and to promote the universal values of human rights, democracy, justice and rule of law.

Therefore, I believe there will be no change in the U.S. position and policy towards Cambodia, which continues to suffer from serious deficiencies in the respect for human rights, democracy, justice and rule of law.

Contrary to current Cambodia that is under -- worse than a one-party rule -- a one-man rule, the U.S. is a vibrant and functioning democracy with real and effective checks and balances to prevent abuses of power.

Contrary to current Cambodia, the government in the U.S. rests on, and functions within, a strong and nationally accepted system where sound decision making processes are conducted by or through independent and respected institutions, namely the White House, the Congress and the Supreme Court.

With respect to U.S. foreign policy there are long-established guidelines and, at the top of the establishment, the White House -- with the support of the Congress-- always relies on a competent and experienced bureaucracy including career diplomats from the State Department, to ensure stability and consistency.
