[Demographic Vietnamization: Election season] Vietnamese workers face deportation

Vietnamese workers face deportation

Khmer Times | 24 April 2017

The Immigration Department has detained 27 Vietnamese migrants suspected of being in Cambodia illegally.

The undocumented workers, 20 men and seven women, were arrested on Friday in Phnom Penh’s Toul Kork district.

Chief investigator at the Immigration Department, Major General Uk Hiesela, said they were arrested in coffee shops throughout Phsar Deumkor commune and have been held for questioning.

“If they are found to have no passports or residency documents, they will be deported and put on the no-entry list permanently,” said Maj Gen Hiesela.

The government’s campaign against foreigners who overstay their visas or enter Cambodia illegally resulted in 3,509 people being deported and barred permanently from the kingdom last year. They came from 63 different countries but 2,570 were Vietnamese.

Since the government started keeping records in 2014 [after strong CNRP showing in 2013 elections], 11,661 foreigners from 72 countries have been deported, 9,927 of them from Vietnam.
