Work begins on Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument in Kep

NDO - A ground breaking ceremony for the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument was held at the Hun Sen Flower Garden, Kep province, on August 27, as an expression of gratitude to the fallen soldiers of both Vietnam and Cambodia.

The monument covers an area of 1,000 m2 within the 6,000 m2 Hun Sen Flower Garden and the construction of the monument is scheduled for completion in December this year.
The ground breaking ceremony saw the presence of Nhem Valy, Vice President and Secretary General of the National Council of Solidarity Front for Development of Cambodia; Ken Satha, Kep provincial Governor; General Yoeung Sokhon, Deputy Commander of the Army; and Vietnam’s Defence Attaché, Nguyen Anh Dung; among others.
Speaking at the ceremony, both Nhem Valy and Ken Satha said that the construction of the monument in Kep is an important event in the relationship between the two countries.
The event also showed the gratitude of the Cambodian people to Vietnam for assisting Cambodia as they escaped the Khmer Rouge’s genocide [the CeePeePee's Hallelujah Chorus] and also aimed to educate younger generations about the support that Vietnam gave to Cambodia.
Vietnam’s Defence Attaché, Nguyen Anh Dung emphasised that the building of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument in Kep, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic ties, expresses the traditional friendship and solidarity between the two countries.
The building of the monument in Kep is part of a project to repair and build the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monuments in Cambodia which is funded by Vietnam's Ministry of Defence.
There are eight out of 17 monuments across Cambodia that have been completed or restored.
