Cambodia – Meeting between Jean-Yves Le Drian and Prak Sokhonn (Paris, 25.09.17)
This first meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of our bilateral relations, notably in the area of economic and social development and the protection of heritage. Jean-Yves Le Drian notably welcomed the inclusion of the temples of Sambor Prei Kuk on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and reaffirmed France’s attachment to our cooperation aimed at safeguarding the site of Angkor.
Jean-Yves Le Drian also expressed his concern following the arrest of the leader of the main opposition party and the closing of several media outlets in Cambodia. He stressed the need - in the run-up to the parliamentary elections - for Cambodia to resume the path toward pluralist democracy, while respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Lastly, the ministers reviewed current regional issues. Jean-Yves Le Drian reaffirmed our desire to strengthen France’s cooperation with ASEAN, notably with respect to security challenges.
