Cambodia buys bridge from firm, scraps toll

Prime Minister Hun Sen said the government will take over management of a bridge built over the Tonle Sap River by the firm belonging tycoon senator Ly Yong Phat.
The move means cars and trucks will no longer have to pay up to $2 to cross the Prek Pnov Bridge in Phnom Penh’s Prek Pnov district.
The bridge, which connects National Road 6 to National Road 5, was constructed by LYP Group in 2010.
Pedestrians and bikes already cross the bridge free, but cars have to pay $1.30 and larger vehicles up to $2 to pass, according to a report by Khmer Times.
In a speech on Thursday, Mr Hun Sen said tolls would be abolished on Oct 15, when the government buys the bridge back.
“The bridge linking National Road 6 to National Road 5 will be free of charge,” he said.
He added he decided to bring the bridge under the control of government to improve the livelihood of the public.
Transport Ministry spokesman Var Sim Sorya said an inter-governmental team will be created to discuss the issue with LYP Group.
Tan Leangcheng, a villager living near the bridge, said she was happy the tolls would be abolished.
“Everyone is so glad they will not need to pay any more,” she said.
