Cambodian government files lawsuit to dissolve main opposition party

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodian government lawyers filed a lawsuit on Friday to demand the dissolution of Cambodia’s main opposition party after its leader was charged with treason last month.

The arrest of Kem Sokha on Sept. 3 brought condemnation from Western countries, while his Cambodia National Rescue Party said it was a ploy by Prime Minister Hun Sen to win an election next year and keep his three-decade hold on power.

Lawyers for the government said the opposition had conspired with foreigners to topple the government, citing a 2013 video clip that shows Kem Sokha talking about a plan to take power with the help of Americans.

This country is totally messed up. The king is absolutely useless to his people and worse, he's being used by the dictator. The prime minister who is acting more like a gangster than a politician. The politicians who are in power are mostly corrupted. The courts are a joke. The armies are mostly corrupted and instead of serving the nation, only serve a person. The people are mostly cowards who care more about themselves than their country. Khmers should be ashamed of themselves. The international communities are sick and tired of these people that they've given all up helping them.

There will be no more CNRP. May I suggest you folks to support LDP from now on?

It's a smart moves for other opposition parties to sue CNRP and knock it out. For so long, CNRP has been the main and only oppressor against the little parties.

Mr. Hun Sen and CPP have been very welcoming and accommodating to other smaller opposition parties. They legitimize him and CPP as a legit elected in a multi-party system.

It's CNRP who has been anti-multi party system. Only CNRP is allowed to run as the opposition and only CNRP is allowed to win the election. (In Kem Sokha's words, he is the chosen one and approved by USA to lead Cambodia.)
