HCM City (VNA) – The General Department of Vietnam Customs and the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia agreed to enhance cooperation at high-level talks between the two customs bodies in Ho Chi Minh City on March 19.

They reached consensus on pushing the negotiations between the two finance ministries on mutual support in customs sector to create legal foundation for bilateral collaboration.

Along with simplifying administrative procedures, they will work together to fight smuggling, trade fraud, drug trafficking and other illegal trade activities in border localities via improving information exchange mechanisms.

At the event, they stated that the two customs bodies have carried out a line-up of bilateral cooperative activities to facilitate two-way trade. They regularly met to update customs procedures as well as exchange information about passengers and goods items through the border gates. Also, they joined hands to crack down smuggling and trade fraud for imports and exports.

Statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs showed that Vietnam-Cambodia trade rose 29.7 percent year-on-year to over 3.79 billion USD in 2017. Vietnam enjoyed a trade surplus of more than 1.75 billion USD.-VNA

VietNamNet Bridge - Thirty years have elapsed since Vietnam ratified the Foreign Investment Law in 1987. Foreign investors committed to invest $312.9 billion by the end of 2017, of which $170 billion was disbursed.

Samsung alone has poured $17 billion into smartphone, electronics and electrical engineering projects in Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen and HCMC in the last 10 years.

On an average, a Vietnamese worker in Vietnam has salary 3-5 times of a Cambodian counterpart salary. And of course, Cambodia hardly has any engineer, especially software engineer. A Vietnamese software engineer makes 20 times a much as a Cambodian garment worker.

How can Cambodia compete in the world? To attract Foreign Direct Investment, Cambodia needs to win International competition. It will be a message, Cambodians are smart and hard working. But nooooo.

Last year, Cambodia ranked 105th out of 111 nations/territories, near the bottom. Some years Cambodia did not bother to send a team since they did not even have enough students to qualify for competition.

Vietnam, on the other hand, ranked third in the world, ahead of USA and all Western countries, including Russia. How about that? What does it take for Khmer to bow down to Vietnamese superiority? More punishment from God perhaps?

I think to be favored by USA is much better than to be favored by China. Why-o-why Vietnam always gets the better deal than Cambodia. I think nobody wants to be friend with Cambodia and China is desperate in expanding influence.
