Cambodia Builds Biggest Ever Data Centre Via International Deal

Cambodia is in bad need of digital expansion while all around it is already going in the right direction. This international effort is set to provide both the local IT economy and the national government a massive step in their catch-up effort.

Cambodia will see the building of its biggest ever data centre to provide cloud services across the nation following a joint venture. The $70m data centre is backed by Te Aikhong Enterprise and Kepstar Data Center of Cambodia and Malaysia-based firm Fourtitude Asia.

Construction is about to begin and the facility across five hectares in the Kambol commune region is expected to be completed within 18 months, reports the Khmer Times.

Te Chour, Te Aikhong Enterprise director, said at a project signing ceremony: “A data centre is a key asset for the development of our digital economy. It is key for our economic growth.

“It will play an important role in attracting investors. Companies are more likely to come to Cambodia if they have a reliable [sic!] place to store data.”

He added: “The data centre will comply with all international requirements and our customers will be private companies and banks, but we will also reserve some space for the government.”

Tang Pen San, director of Fourtitude Asia, said: “We have a lot of experience and expertise that we want to bring to Cambodia. This partnership is important as we found that the country is lacking professionals in technology and cybersecurity.”

In Malaysia last month, Bridge Data Centres expanded its APAC footprint with the acquisition of two data centres there. The new facilities will provide low-latency colocation services for customers across the region, said Bridge.

Singapore-headquartered Bridge acquired the facilities, located in Cyberjaya, from Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), a Malaysian government pension fund.
