Cambodia govt wary of online abuse

PHNOM PENH - The Cambodian government voiced concern Wednesday over the negative side of online social media as a growing number of Cambodians have access to the internet.

Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said some people in Cambodia use Facebook and other social media in a way that affects the private lives of fellow Cambodians as well as society as a whole.

"They are using this social media in order to curse, insult, incite, exaggerate or use rude words as well as sharing fake photos or pornography," he said at a meeting at the Information Ministry.

Khieu Kanharith said that while such online behaviour violates the code of ethics and the press law, the government has no plan to block or impose restrictions on the use of online social media in Cambodia.

An estimated 800,000 Cambodians use online social media.
