Rob Hamill's letter to New Zealand's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Murray McCully

Kem Sokha (centre) talks to the media at the CNRP headquarters in Phnom Penh
Letter to Murray McCully today, 18 July 2014

Dear Minister

I write to you with grave concerns for a NZ citizen who has been arrested and is being held at the notorious Prey Sar prison on dubious charges and apparently faces up to 30 years in jail for insurrection. The New Zealander, Keo Phirom, is an MP-elect in Cambodia and appears to be arrested for political reasons rather than any criminal ones. The arrests took place following a peaceful protest that turned violent after security police intervention. See in this Phnom Penh Post article http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/six-cnrp-members-jail

I ask that our Government takes a meaningful stand on behalf of a NZ citizen, unlike the shameful stance our Government took in the early 1980s under Robert Muldoon when it continued to support Pol Pot's leadership of Cambodia at the UN knowing that my brother, Kerry Hamill, had been abducted, tortured and murdered by the Khmer Rouge regime under the leadership of Pol Pot.

Regards
Rob Hamill
