Greens demand Cambodia deal details
The Australian | August 11, 2014
THE Australian Greens have called on parliament to block any deal that allows Australia to send refugees to Cambodia.
THE federal government appears close to finalising a deal, with
reports Immigration Minister Scott Morrison will travel to Cambodia this
week.
Under an agreement with Phnom Penh, up to 1000 refugees from
the Australian-run detention centre in Nauru would be resettled in
Cambodia. The Greens want Labor and Senate crossbenchers to block the deal, which needs parliamentary approval. "It is time the government was upfront," Greens immigration spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young told reporters in Adelaide.
A spokesman for Mr Morrison said negotiations were continuing but the
government has welcomed the "receptive and positive" response from
Cambodia so far.
