A CHANGE IN AGRICULTURAL POLICY IS NEEDED
In a recent report the FAO confirms that government support to family farming is the key to a real development for a poor and agricultural country such as Cambodia. Priority should be on an increase in agricultural productivity in order to reduce rural poverty.
The government’s current policy to instead support big private companies engaged in land grabbing tends instead to destroy family farming and the government’s neglect about raising productivity for poor family farmers only maintains or worsens poverty in the countryside where hunger is still present.
Excerpts from the FAO Report:
“All kind of evidence shows that poor family farmers can quickly deploy their productivity potential when the appropriate policy environment is effectively put in place (...). Facilitating access to land, water and other natural resources and implementing specific public policies for family farmers (credit, technical assistance, insurance, market access, public purchases, appropriate technologies) are key components for increasing agricultural productivity, eradicating poverty and achieving food security.”
