WHY VIETNAM INVADED CAMBODIA: Political Culture and the Causes of War (Stephen J. Morris, Stanford University Press, 1999)

Chapter 1 - Roots of a Conflict: The Vietnamese Communists and the Cambodians, 1930-70

...early 19th century, having already absorbed large tracts of what is now southern Vietnam from Cambodia... the Vietnamese turned Cambodia into a protectorate... end of 1834, the emperor in Hue instituted direct rule and turned Cambodia into a Vietnamese province.
