Seashore (island?) community (Truy Koh Fishmern Association)
in Kampot are still waiting for authority to act regarding the murder of a
Khmer fisherman by an illegal Vietnamese fisherman that took place at the end
of this past July. The authority has
remained silent. The killing occurred on
26 July 2015; the Vietnamese murderer threw body into the sea. Saour Roeun, a member of the Truy Koh
Fishermen Association) who pulled the corpse from the sea witnessed two illegal
Vietnamese fishing boats entered into Cambodian territory while he and other
Khmer were fishing. These illegal boats
rammed into a Khmer boat to sink it; a man fell overboard; he was picked up the
Vietnamese who killed him. They then
shouted and taunted us to come and pick up the corpse of their colleague in
derogatory language. The murder occurred
around 8 p.m., about 2 km from Truy Koh (Island Truy). Name of murdered man is Ai Yos, aged 42, a
Khmer Cham (Muslim). He is survived by a
wife and two children who had depended solely on the murdered man for their
livelihood. Immediately after the
association filed two separate complaints to relevant authority in
Kampot—maritime border police… Vietnamese fishermen from Koh Tral (island which
belong to Cambodia under Vietnamese control) regularly, freely, fearlessly
enter Cambodian water to fish.
