Senior CNRP Officials Meet With Rainsy in Manila
Cambodia Daily | 14 March 2016
About 20 members of the opposition party’s permanent committee
traveled to Manila on Saturday night for a two-day conference with CNRP
President Sam Rainsy, who remains in exile, party spokesman Yem
Ponhearith said on Sunday.
He said the officials, including deputy opposition leader Kem Sokha,
would discuss the CNRP’s activities since October 2015, when two
opposition lawmakers were beaten at a pro-CPP protest and Mr. Sokha was
removed as the National Assembly’s vice president.
Mr. Ponhearith said the party leaders would also prepare an agenda
for the CNRP’s annual congress, scheduled for March 26. Since Mr. Rainsy
decided not to return to Cambodia after a warrant was issued for his
arrest in November, the party has repeatedly told its members and
supporters to focus their efforts on upcoming elections in 2017 and
2018, and not be distracted by political provocations.
The spokesman said the party would not be discussing the sex scandal surrounding Mr. Sokha, which involves a series of audio clips recently posted to Facebook purporting to be him speaking intimately with a mistress.
“The meeting will not talk about this issue because the CNRP is not concerned about this useless story,” he said.
