August 2016 – No legitimate government without legitimate election
Meeting on 23 July 2016 with the Cambodian
community in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. "The key word is
legitimacy. In a British-style parliamentary democracy as enshrined in
Cambodia’s constitution, any election without the participation of the
opposition leader would not be legitimate -- but
would look really awkward -- because, at the time of the election, the leader
of the parliamentary opposition is the only challenger to the outgoing prime
minister. Any government stemming from an illegitimate election would also be
illegitimate. An illegitimate Cambodian government would not be able to survive
in the present national and international context."
