This citrus tree produces leaves and "laughing oranges" that emit an odor that weakens snakes potentially to death.
Cambodians use the leaves as an ingredient in cooking to cut down fish smell in soup, for example; also for the citrus aroma.
Contrary to popular Khmer belief, the "laughing oranges" do NOT REPEL
snakes; rather they (smell from leaves and fruit) WEAKEN them.
So, do
not think that putting a row of sliced
"laughing oranges" will prevent a snake from passing through into the
dry secure shelter away from the rain; it wont't, unless maybe if you so
overpower the space/air with such overwhelming thickness of this citrus
smell that it may make the snake recoil.
I know / witnessed this distinction from a few first-hand experiences while living here in Kirirom.
