Cambodian NA President concludes Vietnam visit

NDO - A high-ranking delegation of the Cambodian National Assembly (NA), led by President Heng Samrin, left Hanoi on June 26, concluding a four-day official friendship visit to Vietnam, undertaken at the invitation of Vietnamese NA Chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

During his visit, President Heng Samrin held a talk with Vietnamese NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thị Kim Ngan, and met Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Tran Dai Quang, and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc. He also met Secretary of the Hanoi municipal Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai, and received the President of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association. Cambodian NA President Heng Samrin also attended a grand ceremony to celebrate the 50th founding anniversary of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic relations (June 24, 1967); participated in a meeting between the presidents of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Lao Front for National Construction and the Solidarity Front for Development of the Cambodian Motherland; and joined an exchange with outstanding students from the three nations at the Vietnam National University in Hanoi on June 25. At the talks, leaders of the two sides agreed that Vietnam and Cambodia will increase delegation exchanges, as well as meetings between senior leaders, ministries, sectors and localities, so as to coordinate the implementation of the agreements reached. They will also share information, experience and develop concrete measures to solve any problems arising in bilateral relations, in the spirit of mutual understanding and trust, and in conformity with law of Vietnam and Cambodia, international practice and the two countries’ traditional friendship. Both sides agreed to maintain relations in all Party, State and people-to-people diplomacy channels. They also agreed to press ahead with friendship activities and to educate people from all walks of life, especially younger generations, on the Vietnam-Cambodia solidarity, friendship and comprehensive cooperation. They also reached consensus on continuing negotiations between the two countries for the prompt signing of the Vietnam-Cambodia Border Trade Agreement, which will replace the Agreement on Trade and Exchange of Goods and Services in Border Areas signed in 2001. President Heng Samrin noted that the Cambodian NA backs the facilitation of licensing for Vietnamese businesses’ investment projects in Cambodia. Chairwoman Ngan called on the two sides to intensify their cooperation in defence and security, and join hands to fight smuggling and cross-border crimes. She also suggested stronger coordination in searching and repatriating the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who sacrificed their lives in Cambodia [the cover to maintain overt military presence, in addition to the covert ones].
