NDO - The 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic relations (June 24, 1967) was celebrated with a grand ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on June 29.
Organised by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, the ceremony saw the attendance of Nguyen Thanh Phong, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee and Chairman of the city People’s Committee; and Cambodian Consul General Im Hen.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman Phong underlined that Vietnam and Cambodia are neighbouring countries with long-standing relations. Despite countless difficulties and challenges faced over the past five decades, the solidarity, traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia have continually been reinforced and developed, which is a priceless, sacred and sustainable asset of the two nations.
As the country’s biggest economic hub, Ho Chi Minh City has exerted efforts to contribute significantly to promoting bilateral relations through specific cooperation activities with Cambodian localities, especially in the capital city of Phnom Penh, he said, adding that the administration and people of the city always attach great importance to consolidating and developing the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two Governments and peoples of Vietnam and Cambodia, contributing to peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
In his speech, Cambodian Consul General Im Hen expressed his deep sense of gratitude to the Party, State and people of Vietnam for their precious support and assistance to the Cambodian people in recovering and re-constructing the country. He highlighted the great sacrifice of Vietnam’s volunteer soldiers who helped free the Cambodian people from Pol Pot’s genocidal regime on January 7, 1979.
He also expressed his wish that with more efforts made by leaders and peoples of the two countries, in the coming time, the Cambodia -Vietnam relations will continue to develop sustainably under the motto “good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability”, for the benefitof the two peoples, as well as for peace, stability and prosperity in the region and around the world.
On the same day, a photo exhibition themed “the traditional friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia” opened in Nguyen Hue walking street. On display are 95 photographs reflecting the friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia throughout history, especially the cooperation and friendship in many fields between Ho Chi Minh City and Cambodian localities, as well as the beauty of the land and people of Cambodia.
