This
young dancer in 1927 is the future Princess Sokto Soupa. She first
married Prince Sisowath Entaravong, Prince Youtevong's elder brother and
became Neak Moneang Phlous. (She was also the first cousin of HM Queen
Norodom Monineath.) She then married HRH Prince Norodom Phurissara and
followed her husband who was on the side of the GRUNC, which was the
alliance between the Khmer Rouges and the Sihanoukists
against the US-supported Khmer Republic . Princess Soupa came back to
Phnom Penh after April 1975 with Her Husband and was put into a
re-education Camp in Boeung Trabek, together with Prince Sisowath
Methavi (Prince Sirik Matak's brother) who was married with Princess
Nannette Izzi (elder sister of HM Queen Monineath). Unfortunately,
Princess Soupa was taken away to be killed by the Khmer Rouges, despite
of the support She and Her husband gave to the Revolution. She was
posthumously titled "Her Royal Highness" by King Sihanouk in recognition
of her faithfulness.
At the time that she was one of the most talented dancers of King Sisowath Monivong's ballet.
Thanks to my cousin Ravivaddhana Monipong Sisowath for theses precious and invaluable information.
I didn't know when I took "Sokyto Moskyto" as my nickname that my grandmother called Sokto Soupa. And I understands better from where comes my love of the dance, music and my rebel's soul!
Here
is a photo dated 1968, of HRH Princess Norodom Sokto Soupa together
with her husband HRH Prince Norodom Phurissara, minister of Foreign
Affairs during their official visit to Australia
This stupid royal family is good at nothing but dancing.
