Punctuation marks in the Romance and Germanic languages proliferated with the invention of the printing press. Many new punctuation marks were invented to assist the mass in reading, an activity till then preserved for full-time scholars, ie, the monks.
The punctuation marks also allowed for greater word spacing.
All work toward clarity and comprehension.
Moreover, punctuation marks allow for the composing of more complex sentences which in turn leads to the expression of greater nuances, thus culminating in the building of ideas.
The 3 greatest influencers of the English language who lived in the 16th century:
1. William TYNDALE: 1494 – 1536; known for his translation of the Bible into English, the basis for the King James Version.
2. William SHAKESPEARE: 1564 - 1616; the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.
3. John MILTON: 1608 - 1674 (17th century); wrote the greatest piece of literature in the English language, Paradise Lost.
To this day, we use phrases and constructions they created.

Per Ms. Theary Seng's advocate for the correct usage of punctuation, perhaps in the future, there will be a software application which will automatically insert the punctuation marks into one's writing.
ReplyDeleteA guy with a superior intellectual power such as I am can write such an application. Basically, if there is already an application to do the language translation from Khmer to other language, such application already has enough context to automatically insert the punctuation marks into the writing.
Hint for you ok? If you cannot write such software application, then you can marry a guy who can do so. :)
