CAMBODIA: A Shattered Society - A Conservative Society - Buddhism identifiably Khmer?

 Chap. 1: A Conservative Society

We must not suppose that Buddhism guides Khmers in their material lives....Buddhism known as the Lesser Vehicle or Theravada has not succeeded in supplanting the spirits: like the other traditional traits, they impregnate the Khmers' whole life.
...
The practice of Buddhism does not imply many demands....individuals do as they wish.... To define oneself as a Khmer by the fact of being a Buddhist, as some leaders presently do... Many other peoples in Asia practice Theravada--Laotians, Thais, Burmese, Ceylonese--yet they could not therefore be considered Khmers.
